Qur'an is the central religious text of Islam, which Muslims believe to be a revelation from God (Allah). It is widely regarded as the finest piece of literature in the Arabic language. The Quran is divided into chapters (suras) which are then divided into verses (ayahs). Each ayah is a word or phrase that is related to a different topic in the Quran.
The Quran has been memorized by many different people over the years, but the most popular recitation today is that of Sheikh Muhammad al-Mahalli.
Sheikh Mohammad al-Mahalli was born in the city of Al Qaqaa in the northern part of the Islamic Republic of Iran. He became a well-known Qur'an reciter at an early age. His father, Mohammad Ali al-Mahalli, also a well-known Qur'an reciter, was a famous religious scholar in his time. His mother, Shahpar al-Sultani, was a sister of the great Sufi, Sheikh Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti.
